It was launched on April 27, 2014 and has an initial enrollment of over 1800 students from more than twenty countries across the world. UHS will offer both full-time and part-time programs leading to undergraduate, postgraduate and professional qualifications. The school currently offers 36 different courses with four entry points throughout the year for new students. By September 2018, approximately 3,600 students are expected to be enrolled.The campus covers an area of about 250,000 square meters (about 270 acres) .
The University’s Board of Trustees has approved the recommendation by its Planning Committee that its Shenzhen campus have two campuses-one for graduate studies, the other for undergraduate education. Both would occupy new buildings designed as “gateways” into the main complex. One gateway would symbolize academic excellence, while the other would embody innovation and entrepreneurship. In August 2017, the University submitted applications to the Ministry of Education in Mainland China for authorization to operate a medical facility in Guangdong Province, as well as for approval to establish the School of Graduate Studies in Shenzhen. The University also plans to submit an application this autumn to the Ministry for permission to grant degrees.
A key feature of UHS's Shenzhen campus will be the first high-rise research laboratory in Asia built specifically to support life science and biomedical engineering research, reflecting one of the University’s three major strategic themes: Advance Greater Bay Area, Build Global City of Medicine, and Lead Innovation and Technology.
